Learn the 2 Times Table by Doubling

A quick way to solve any multiplication in the 2 times table is to add the number to itself. This is called doubling.

4 + 4
= 8
7 + 7
= 14
11 + 11
= 22

So if you already know how to double small numbers, you already know much of the 2 times table. For example, doubling 9 gives 18, which means 2 × 9 = 18.

Every Answer in the 2 Times Table Is Even

The products of the 2 times table are all even numbers. An even number can be divided into two equal whole-number groups and always ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.

Skip Count by 2 to Find the Answer

Another way to practice the table of 2 is to count forward in steps of two:

2 → 4 → 6 → 8 → 10 → 12 → 14 → 16 → 18 → 20 → 22 → 24

Each step represents another group of 2. For example, the sixth number in this sequence is 12, so 2 × 6 = 12.

With practice, you will no longer need to count through the sequence. You will begin to recognize answers such as 2 × 6 = 12 and 2 × 8 = 16 immediately.

Think in Pairs

The 2 times table is especially easy to visualize because multiplication by 2 can represent pairs.

Imagine 5 pairs of socks. Each pair contains 2 socks, so there are:

5 pairs × 2 socks = 10 socks

The same idea works with pairs of shoes, bicycle wheels, eyes, gloves and many other everyday objects. Thinking in pairs can make multiplication by 2 easier to understand instead of simply memorizing the answers.
