Break the 7 Times Table Into Easier Parts

Instead of trying to memorize a difficult multiplication fact all at once, you can split 7 into numbers connected to tables you already know.

One useful method is to think of 7 as 5 + 2. Multiply by 5 and by 2 separately, then add the two answers.

(5 × 6) + (2 × 6)
= 42
(5 × 8) + (2 × 8)
= 56
(5 × 9) + (2 × 9)

You do not always need to start at the beginning of the table and count forward. A faster method is to begin with a nearby fact that you already remember.

7 × 6 = 42

7 × 10 = 70, − 7
7 × 9 = 63

The 10 times table is especially useful here. For example, 7 × 10 = 70, so you can subtract 7 to find 7 × 9 = 63.

You can also subtract 14 from 70 to find 7 × 8:

7 × 10 = 70
Two fewer groups means subtracting 7 twice:
70 − 14 = 56
Therefore, 7 × 8 = 56.
