How to Use a Multiplication Chart
A multiplication chart organizes multiplication facts into rows and columns. The numbers across the top are one set of factors, while the numbers down the left side are the other set.
To find a product, locate both factors and follow them until the row and column meet.
3 × 4 = 12

9 × 8 = 72
To find 7 × 8, locate 7 on one side of the chart and 8 on the other. Follow the row and column until they meet at 56.

Patterns You Can Find in a Multiplication Chart
One advantage of displaying multiplication facts in a grid is that number patterns become easier to see.
The chart is symmetrical
The multiplication chart has the same values on either side of its main diagonal because multiplication works in either order.

This is called the commutative property of multiplication. It means you do not need to learn 3 × 7 and 7 × 3 as two separate facts.
Square numbers appear on the diagonal
When a number is multiplied by itself, the result is called a square number. These facts form the main diagonal of the chart.
1 × 1 = 1
2 × 2 = 4
3 × 3 = 9
4 × 4 = 16
5 × 5 = 25
6 × 6 = 36
The pattern continues through facts such as 8 × 8 = 64, 10 × 10 = 100 and 12 × 12 = 144.
Even-number rows contain only even products
Rows for even numbers such as 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 contain only even products. For example, the 6 times table includes 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36.
The 5 and 10 rows have easy endings
Multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5, while whole-number multiples of 10 end in 0. These repeating digit patterns are easy to recognize visually in the chart.
