How to Learn Times Tables

Learning multiplication is easier when you connect new facts to patterns you already understand. You do not need to memorize every multiplication fact in isolation.

Example: if you know that 4 × 7 = 28, you can double 28 to find 8 × 7 = 56.

As you move through the tables, use doubling, skip counting, nearby multiplication facts and number patterns to work out unfamiliar answers. Then repeat those facts until you can recall them without using the shortcut.

Which Times Tables Should You Learn First?

There is no single required order, but some tables have simpler patterns and can provide useful building blocks for later multiplication facts.

Start with the 1, 2, 5 and 10 times tables
These tables contain simple patterns. Multiplication by 2 is doubling, multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5, and whole-number multiples of 10 end in 0.
Move on to 3 and 4
The 3 times table introduces counting in groups of three, while the 4 times table can be calculated by doubling twice.
Then practice 6, 8 and 9
These tables can be connected to facts you already know. For example, multiplication by 6 can use the 3 times table, and multiplication by 8 can use repeated doubling.
Spend extra time on the 7 times table
The 7 times table has fewer obvious patterns, so breaking difficult facts into known multiplication facts can be especially useful.
Finish with 11 and 12
The 11 times table has recognizable digit patterns, while the 12 times table can be built from the 10 and 2 times tables.
