Ways to Work Out a Multiplication Fact

When an answer does not come to mind immediately, use a strategy instead of guessing. As you practice, try to move from working out the answer to recalling it directly.

Double for the 2 times table
Multiplying by 2 means doubling. For example, 2 × 7 is the same as 7 + 7, so 2 × 7 = 14.
Double twice for the 4 times table
To calculate 4 × 6, double 6 to get 12 and double 12 to get 24. Therefore, 4 × 6 = 24.
Use the 5 and 10 patterns
Multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5, while whole-number multiples of 10 end in 0. These patterns can help you recognize whether an answer looks reasonable.
Use a nearby multiplication fact
If you know 7 × 7 = 49, add another 7 to find 7 × 8 = 56.
Use ×10 minus one group for ×9
To calculate 9 × 8, start with 10 × 8 = 80 and subtract 8. Therefore, 9 × 8 = 72.
Split ×12 into ×10 and ×2
To find 12 × 7, calculate 10 × 7 = 70 and 2 × 7 = 14. Add them to get 84.

How Long Should You Practice Times Tables?

You do not need very long practice sessions to work on multiplication facts. Short sessions can be easier to repeat regularly and help you concentrate on the facts that need attention.

A useful routine is to begin with one table, identify the facts that take the longest to answer, and then finish with mixed questions to see whether you can recall those facts outside their usual sequence.

Example: if 8 × 7 and 8 × 9 keep slowing you down, practice those facts separately before returning to mixed multiplication questions.

Use a Multiplication Chart While Learning

A multiplication chart can help when you are still learning where individual multiplication facts fit within the tables.

Follow one number across a row to see all of its multiples, or compare matching facts on opposite sides of the chart.
